Welcome to MHButterflies - I’m a nail tech with 11 years of experience. I started doing nails in my 30s. I’d always gone to a salon or had a local nail tech do them but I suddenly found myself with out anyone to do mine. I’d lost confidence with salons and was looking for someone who ran an at home business. This is when MHButterflies was thought up!
For 5 years I’d been a child minder which I loved! But over the years the paperwork side of thing took me away from minding the children. I became an admin which I didn’t like.
I decided to do a free course in my local community centre on doing my own nails. From there I’ve done various courses over the years. Within a few months I’d replaced my childminding income - I could no longer do both and with health issues not on my side I decided being a nail tech was my way forward.
I thought I would share some background information about how I got to where I am.
In 2011 I started a child minding business, which I enjoyed immensely and to my surprise was very successful. As time went on it became successful enough that I employed staff which was great. (help at last🤣)
in the meantime I had started at looking at doing an acrylic nail course so I could do my own nails (I’m so blooming fussy) as I couldn't find anyone to do them as I liked them to be done. I found an online course, paid for it and completed it. I thoroughly enjoyed doing this more than I realised. I noticed a couple of local free nail art courses (wow free, 😯I know) for mums, so I thought why not. I signed up and I cant explain just how much I enjoyed doing them.
I carried on with my childminding business but realised I wasn't enjoying it as much as I used to, as the requirements for recording everything was taking all my time😤 and I wasn't getting to do the fun part, interacting with the children as much. (best part of the job)
After doing my own nails for a while I thought I could start doing a few friends nails, which I did. Then I started thinking I could start earning some extra cash by offering nail appointments, which I did.
By daytime I was a childminder, and evening and weekends I was a nail tech. I started to notice that I was burning myself out, I took a good look at my earnings from both of my businesses and what one was costing me more and also, which one I was enjoying the most. (of course it was the nails)
Well it turns out that I was earning enough to give up my child minding business and do my nail business full time .

Chapter 2
So, as I embarked on my new career, as a mobile nail technician going to peoples homes, I did a basic offer to get me going. I charged a very small amount of £10 and of course I was very busy. As I increased my stock of nail products I was using, I realised that I could no longer be mobile! I had a lot off stuff, and I don’t drive! My poor back 😂.
So I decided to work from my house! First off in our dining room, but then I found a second-hand garden house on Facebook! It was perfect as a garden salon for doing nails. My husband insulated my little salon I painted it white, bought some large lip decals from online and put them on the walla and laid some lino, added some some shelves a desk and a heater and I was ready to go.
I worked happily in my little garden house (shed) for quite a few months before upgrading to a bigger summer house, which I also managed to buy second hand.
After time, my basic offer ended, and I began charging my worth.
